About karenlovestodance

I love to dance, walk and ride bikes. I also enjoy shopping for clothes in in charity shops, though on one occasion I bought a teddy bear called Horace instead!

Holiday in France

I think I should write a little bit about my recent holiday in France, my third visit and I am thinking I really should learn to speak some French.  Anyway, we headed off to France on an overnight crossing, so after boarding the ferry in the footwell of the car (those of you that look at facebook will already know I get very worried that customs will think my stuffing is suspicious) I was tucked into bed in a cabin.IMG_4375I was woken by music playing in the cabin that got louder and louder.  There have been incidents in the past with me being left behind places so Karen left me safely in the  cabin while she went off to find some breakfast – for some reason she sometimes forgets that I like to eat too!

I did lots on my holiday but will just tell you a few highlights.  On the first morning there was a little bit of rain, so I needed wellingtons in order to venture out around the campsite.  Paddington didn’t want me to borrow his for nearly two weeks, so I borrowed Karen’s instead, they are so good they have become my wellingtons of choice.  All short individuals should have some boots like this:IMG_4383In no time I was off exploring my surroundings:IMG_4386The rain soon went away and we also moved to another campsite, where the highlight for me was the canoeing trip. Initially I was put into a barrel to keep me safe in case the canoe capsized:IMG_4459The lid was even done up – it wasn’t pleasant in there at all.  I was very very pleased when only after about 5 minutes on the canoe in the barrel Karen rescued me, and as the water was so calm, she even let me do the paddling for a while.IMG_4477My fur and stuffing is always a problem with regards to watersports, as when wet I turn into a soggy lump.  Hence at the swimming pool I had to be content with peering into the water looking for fish, but there weren’t any that I could see.IMG_4593We went to some wonderful gardens where the hedges had been cut in shapes (topiary I have been told).  They are called the Gardens of Marqueyssac .  IMG_4690The thing I liked best there was the tree house, which wore me out a bit climbing up the ladder.IMG_4668IMG_4663I was carried in the bag all the way to a cliff top view point, which didn’t sound very interesting for a bear, but when we got there the view was amazing.  All the hay bales looked tiny and I could see the river that I was canoeing in just a few days before.IMG_4678There was also a very interesting water pump (though no water came out) that I think Growler would have liked. Perhaps I will be allowed to bring a friend next time we go away.IMG_4692One of the sites where we stayed had some bear sized climbing equipment that I rather enjoyed usingIMG_4824…and  yet another swimming pool for me to sit by but not get in.  I only sat in the sun for a very short while though as Karen says I am like National Trust furniture and I must be kept out of the sun otherwise I could fade and disintegrate (whatever that means….)IMG_4830On our last evening in France I was taken to a restaurant to for a traditional French meal.   I didn’t like the look of the snails though so gave them to Karen.  I still can’t believe she really did eat them!IMG_4931I did however like the strawberry cake, that had lots of tasty creamy stuff inside it.IMG_4935We travelled back to England on a daytime ferry so I was able to sit on the deck and watch as France got smaller and smaller. (I turned around for the photo, as I don’t think I look that good from behind)IMG_4948When we reached Portsmouth Karen made sure I was safely in the bag to get back down to the car deck ready for the drive back to Bristol.

Now I am wondering where they will take me next…..

Going back to my roots (to Alresford)

Karen has written a book about me, and wanted very much to deliver a copy to Alresford Library in order for people in the town to read about my life.  So, a couple of weeks ago on the way to France ( yes this sounds odd, but we were on the way to Portsmouth to get on a ferry) we spent a while in Alresford.   I don’t remember much about the town where I was made, I guess after being stuffed I was put in a box and sent off to a shop to be sold, so wouldn’t have seen much Alresford.  Anyway, I was delighted to find that it is a lovely place and I am proud to carry the name of this place on my label.

The first place we visited after parking the car was Alresford Library.  The staff there seemed a bit surprised to have a visit from a bear but they seemed to like the book.IMG_4300It is only a very small library, nothing at all like the library I usually visit, Bristol Central Library.  The children’s section is upstairs, and just the right size for bears and children.  IMG_4307 - CopyAfter visiting the library Karen decided we all needed a nice cup of tea.  We found a traditional tea room called Tiffin, and I must admit the tea was brewed as tea should be, and I do like china cups, those mugs some places use are so heavy for a small bear like me to lift up.IMG_4321 - CopyNow it was time to find out where I was made, and whether the building was even still there.  After examining maps and signposts, off we went to find the place where The Town Mill might have been, and to our delight, we found it.  Now converted into flats, but a lovely place with a waterfall right next to it.  I felt quite emotional and had to sit quietly on the grass for a few moments.IMG_4328 - CopyThen Karen helped me up onto a post for a photo of me right in front of the building in which I was made.IMG_4334 - CopyHere I am by the front door to the apartments which has the name plaque ‘The Town Mill’ and confirmed we had the right place.IMG_4332 - CopyKaren thought it would be nice to find the place where some of my relatives were made too, as newer bears were made in The Station Mill, so we set off to find it.   Not surprisingly it was next to the railway station.

IMG_4335 - Copy

I think someone needs to do some gardening there though as there were no flowers in the window boxes.IMG_4339 - CopyWe went on the visit Alresford Station, which was really exciting as old steam powered trains run from there.  IMG_4342There were some interesting scales for weighing luggage, and bearsIMG_4344 - Copy…and a seat for people and bears waiting for trains.IMG_4354Then the most exciting thing happened, a steam train came puffing into the station just as I had climbed up onto the bridge that crosses the track. IMG_4347 - CopyI thought it was a shame that we didn’t have Growler present as he is very fond of steam engines – I will have to ask Karen to bring him along too next time.IMG_4350I then did a bit of modelling next to the station sign and the train.IMG_4357 - CopyThe train used to be used to transport watercress, which is grown in the area for people to eat.  I found some in the nearby stream but I prefer cake.IMG_4361 - CopyOn our way back to the car we also came across The Old Fire Station, now a picture framing gallery,IMG_4359 - Copy…and here I am at The New Fire Station:-IMG_4312 - CopyI didn’t see any Firemen though, which is a shame as I would have liked to try on their hats.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and I am happy to know that me and all my Alresford relatives were made in such a beautiful place. I hope to visit again one day.

Feeling important

Today the final version of my book arrived, as somehow a couple of small typing errors managed to get into the first edition (Karen typed the word ‘to’ twice in one place and left it out where it should have been in another!)   I don’t think many people even noticed the error as they were so interested in reading about me their brains just read it as if correct.  Anyway, Gordon and Sue seem pretty impressed with the book.IMG_4296 I am feeling important as a copy has been packed up to send to the British Library for ‘legal deposit’.  My story will be stored there along with books about other important characters such as Winnie the Pooh & Paddington.IMG_4298I might also have to send copies to  National Library of Scotland, the National Library of Wales, the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, the University Library, Cambridge, and the Library of Trinity College, Dublin if those libraries request them, though Karen thinks it unlikely, as I am ‘just a bear’.   Hmmm…..

Fishing boats in the woods

This evening when I was put into the bag after hearing Karen mention the word ‘woods’ and ‘modelling’ I thought I was going on another outing for photographs of me looking handsome stood amongst the lovely wild flowers that are abundant at this time of year.

However, when I was taken out of the bag I had a massive surpise, I was indeed in a woodland, but was surrounded by old fishing boats.
IMG_4209

There was no water anywhere in sight, making me very puzzled as to how the boats ended up in the woods.

IMG_4226

I then heard Karen talking and realised that the boats are part of something humans call art, and are there to make people think, which is what I was doing.

IMG_4217

It seems a shame these old boats aren’t wanted anymore.  The art installation is called ‘Withdrawn’ which Karen says is the same term used for library books that are no longer needed.  After some thought,  I think it is better for the fish if some boats are out of the sea.  Fish have a tough time as people want to keep catching them to eat  and sometimes other creatures get caught in the fishing nets too.    I am glad I am not a fish.

IMG_4239

While I was being photographed on the boats there were a two people sat in one of the big boats talking quite loudly about oceans and fish while filming themselves.   It turned out that one of them was the artist, Luke Jerram.

Here is some more information about the boats and their location:IMG_4244

Walking in the woods in the spring

Last week I went walking in the woods (though owing to my rather short stature, I didn’t walk to the woods but was carried there in a bag).    I was amazed at the beauty of the spring flowers, especially the wild garlic, which was growing in carpets all over the woodland floor.

IMG_4148

It was quite a warm day for a furry bear, though the woods are shaded,  I think the colours of the flowers added to the feeling of being somewhere cool, especially the bluebells.

IMG_4132

I didn’t find any large groups of teddy bears having picnics there though, in fact I didn’t see any other bears.  I will be going again as would like to see how the wood changes throughout the seasons, so I hope to be taken again in August.

I’m back !

I’ve been so busy making friends with newly adopted Alresford Bears (there are 11 of us now),  modelling for birthday cards and visiting all sorts of places for the last couple of years my blog has been forgotten about entirely.   I have posted on my facebook page quite often though which you can see at http://www.facebook.com/horacethealresfordbear.

The autumn is now here and I won’t be being taken out in a carrier bag so often, and there won’t be anymore new arrivals as Karen says there isn’t room to adopt any more of my relatives.    Here we all waiting to do various photo shoots for a counting book that Karen created for her great nephew.  She is also writing a book about me.

My first blog post

011

I was first mentioned by Karen over a year ago in her blog about buying clothes from charity shops.  Oneday she was looking for clothes and found me on a shelf all on my own and bought me.     http://karenborek.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/the-charity-shop-bear/

Karen went on to post photos of me getting up to various antics on her facebook account, then a couple of months ago I was a very happy bear when she set up a facebook page just for me.     http://www.facebook.com/HoracetheAlresfordBear

I have decided I rather like putting photos of myself on the internet, and sharing my thoughts, so today I am starting a blog  🙂
